Most people cite ethical reasons as to why they’ve decided to eat a solely plant-based diet.

Eating less meat is better for the environment. Eating plants rather than feeding plants to animals, and then eating the animals themselves is a more efficient way to use water, and land. It also produces less pollution. Additionally, an animal-product free diet means less industrial farms, where animals are often kept in cruel conditions. But vegan and vegetarian diets aren’t solely better for the environment; they also come along with a host of health benefits.

Plant-based diets are generally lower in saturated fat, and LDL cholesterol (the unhealthy type). As a result, vegans and vegetarians tend to have lower blood pressure, and lower blood cholesterol. Vegans and vegetarians also have a decreased risk for multiple types of cancer, including many cancers of the digestive system.

Apart from the physical health benefits, plant-based diets that include different types of seeds, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and other unprocessed foods, may improve mental health and overall mood. According to a study in Nutrition Journal, participants who ate meat on a daily basis who switched to a vegetarian diet, reported improvements in mood and decreased stress after only two weeks. The study suggested that the improved mood was due to an elimination of arachidonic, a long chain fatty acid that is present in meat, and associated with symptoms of depression.

The vegan diet isn’t for everyone, but for many it’s an excellent way to improve their own health, and work towards a healthier environment.
